About Mount Desert Island

Mount Desert Island covers 108 square miles (69,000 acres) and is 13 miles wide and 16 miles long. It is host to many small towns, the most popular being Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Seal Harbor, and the town or Tremont. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce can provide a wealth of information about the sites and places to visit.

Acadia National Park covers 2/5 of the island and encompasses 46 square miles (32,000 acres) with 120 miles of hiking trails and 45 miles of carriage roads. It was the first National Park East of the Mississippi and the first one to consist of publicly donated land.

The island has something for everyone from outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, swimming, golf, wildlife, sightseeing on the ocean, at the park,or at a lake. At night there is fine dining, casual dining, and shopping for all. There is a lot to do for families, couples, and singles alike. For an easy way to get around without driving, contact Explore Acadia.
